Apple is planing to equip the iPhone 18 phones with under-display Face ID technology, according to a new rumour that emerged over the weekend.

According to a leaker, posting on Weibo (via 9to5Mac), Apple has developed “micro-transparent glass panels” for the iPhone 18 series. While the post from ‘Smart Pikachu’ doesn’t specify which models would receive the upgrade, previous reports have mentioned the Pro models and a foldable model if Apple ever gets around to making one.

Previous reports have suggested that with the sensors under the display, Apple would be able to opt for a small cutout in the upper left of the display as a selfie camera. The (translated) post says: “The material end of the iPhone 18 series is confirmed to be 3D under the test screen. Stitching micro-transparent glass.”

By moving the Face ID sensor under the display, it wouldn’t enable Apple to dispense with the Dynamic Island entirely, but it might be able to make it smaller. Whether the technology would be ready for next year remains to be seen. We’ve been down this path before multiple times only for early rumours to subside as the details begin to emerge.

I would be a little bit surprised if Apple made this change as soon as this year. It may be more likely for that 20th anniversary iPhone Apple is said to be planning for 2027. We shall see.
