Apple has earlier launched the affordable version of the iPhone 16 series, the iPhone 16e, at a much cheaper price. Now, the tech giant is focusing on making MacBooks more affordable for users. As per the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is planning a low-cost MacBook powered by the same chip found in the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro — the A18 Pro.

It must be noted that the current MacBook Air starts at $999 or Rs 99,900 in India.  Based on that, this new model could dip below that price, targeting users who want a Mac but don’t need all the power that comes with the M-series chips.

Powered by an iPhone Chip

Unlike current MacBooks that use Apple’s M-series processors, this budget-friendly version is expected to feature the A18 Pro chip, the same chipset which is used for the iPhone 16 Pro, the report suggested. While that may sound like a step down, but know that the A18 Pro is designed with a strong CPU, an upgraded GPU, and a powerful Neural Engine built to handle AI-driven tasks.

Benchmarks suggest that the A18 Pro offers performance close to the original M1 chip, which many users still find perfectly capable for everyday tasks like browsing, media consumption, office work, and even light editing.

New Affordable MacBook: What Else To Expect

Kuo mentions the new MacBook could come with a 13-inch display, which is the same size as the current MacBook Air. In terms of looks, Apple may offer it in fresh colour options, including silver, pink, yellow, and blue. Though other hardware specs are still under wraps, this move suggests Apple is trying to widen its customer base with a visually fun and cost-effective device.

When Can We Expect It?

Production of the new MacBook is expected to begin either in late 2025 or early 2026. Apple is reportedly aiming to ship between 5 to 7 million units in 2026, which signals a strong push toward making Macs more accessible.

This would mark the first time a MacBook uses an A-series chip instead of the Mac-specific M-series, and if priced right, it could change how entry-level users think about owning a Mac.
