Apple really doesn’t want you to cancel TV Plus

We’ve all been there. You go to cancel a no-longer-needed subscription only to be swayed by an incentive to stay signed up for a bit longer, usually at a discounted rate or even entirely free.

While Apple does offer free trials of its subscriptions, mainly when you buy certain new products, it doesn’t tend to throw in incentives to keep you signed up.

In fact, usually when you try to cancel a subscription, especially during a free trial period, your service is immediately cut short.

However, one eagle-eyed Redditor spotted a surprise twist from Apple when they attempted to unsubscribe to Apple TV Plus.

The post shows a screenshot of an attempt to cancel Apple TV Plus on an iPhone. Here we can see an offer of 54% off the next two months, which works out to just $5.99 each and then reverts back to $12.99 a month on a rolling basis.

While some commented that this attempt didn’t work for them, others claimed they were greeted with a discount when they bluffed their way to cancelling.

So, why is Apple offering a rare discount to keep users subscribed to Apple TV Plus? We could argue that it’s because there isn’t a hit TV series that’s streaming weekly on the platform at the moment. Sure, shows like Ted Lasso and Severance remain staples of Apple TV Plus, but it’s arguably now worth keeping a subscription just to keep rewatching the same series.

And yes, there are new series streaming weekly at the moment but with arguably much less fanfare compared to other Apple TV originals.

Having said that, another theory could be keeping users signed up in time for upcoming series. There’s the third series of Eugene Levy’s award-winning The Reluctant Traveller alongside series four of The Morning Show too, which are both launching mid-September.

Whatever the reason, with so many subscription services to splurge on, we’ll happily take a price cut where we can.
