Apple Studios is developing an untitled movie based on Weekend Rebels, a 2023 German comedy-drama about a father and his autistic son in search of a favorite Premier League club. Here are the details.
Apple’s version will be co-produced by the original producers of the original film
As reported by Deadline, Mark Wahlberg (The Departed, Boogie Nights) was already attached to the project, and now he’ll be joined by Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring, Bates Motel).
Deadline’s sources also say that, while in Weekend Rebels, father and son go watch every single soccer team to pick a favorite club, Apple’s version “is said to take place in the NBA,” given its ties to LeBron James’ SpringHill production company.
This untitled project marks the second collaboration between Wahlberg and Apple, following the 2023 comedy The Family Plan, which is getting a sequel slated for 2026.
Interestingly, it is yet another sports-themed production for Apple TV+, which also has soccer-themed Ted Lasso, golf-themed Stick, racing-themed F1: the Movie, baseball-themed Fight for Glory: 2024 World Series, among others.
Apple is also producing a pickeball-themed comedy, and streams live MLS and MLB matches.
Apple TV+ is available for $12.99 per month and features hit TV shows and movies like The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking and Silo.
