Apple has announced it will shift some of its Mac mini production from Asia to the US later this year. The production will begin at Foxconn’s Houston facility, and the goal is to eventually meet the Mac mini demand in the region.

Apple’s chief operating officer, Sabih Khan, shared the news in a video interview with The Wall Street Journal. “We’re very excited to tell you that later this year, we will be beginning Mac mini manufacturing right here in this space,” Khan said. “Over time, we want to scale Mac Mini here to serve our customers in this area.”

The development is part of Apple’s $600 billion commitment to boost manufacturing in the US, the Journal reports. Apple currently makes thousands of Mac minis in Asia each week, and only a small portion of those will be shifted to the US.

This wouldn’t be the first time Mac computers have been made in the country. Apple began manufacturing Mac Pros at an Austin facility in 2013 and continues to do so in a very limited capacity. Production there has not scaled due to low demand for the Mac Pro, Khan added.

The video also shares glimpses of Apple’s chip manufacturing at GlobalWafers’ Sherman, Texas, facility, as well as at TSMC and ASML facilities in Phoenix. Apple says it doesn’t build any of these factories; it just “drives” its suppliers to use them.

The news arrives just hours ahead of President Trump’s State of the Union address and days ahead of what’s expected to be a busy week for Apple. The company has an event scheduled for March 4, but it is expected to announce at least five new products in the days leading up to it.

Expected devices include the iPhone 17e, a new low-budget MacBook, M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pros, 12th-gen iPad with Apple Intelligence, and an M4-powered iPad Air.
