Managing Macs, iPads, and iPhones at scale continues to get easier as Apple continually addresses pain points year after year, but some parts of the job still feel more tedious than they should. For me, building configuration profiles is one of those tasks that I still sorta hate doing. It’s not overly complicated but can be time-consuming, especially when dealing with macOS app permissions and privacy settings. That’s where iMazing’s Profile Editor has been a Swiss Army knife tool for IT admins. With version 2, it became an even more useful tool for Apple IT admins.

About Apple @ Work: Bradley Chambers managed an enterprise IT network from 2009 to 2021. Through his experience deploying and managing firewalls, switches, a mobile device management system, enterprise grade Wi-Fi, 1000s of Macs, and 1000s of iPads, Bradley will highlight ways in which Apple IT managers deploy Apple devices, build networks to support them, train users, stories from the trenches of IT management, and ways Apple could improve its products for IT departments.

Total App Setup streamlines privacy preference setup and more

The headline feature in version 2 is something called Total App Setup. If you’ve ever configured Privacy Preferences Policy Control settings for macOS apps, you know it can be a slog for many app types. Total App Setup analyzes an app bundle and automatically generates the necessary payloads for PPPC, notifications, login items, and associated domains. I understand how Apple has proceeded here for security, but it always reminds me of Windows Vista.

What used to take 10 to 15 minutes per app now takes seconds. It works with any app you throw at it, and the resulting profile is compatible with any device management that supports configuration profiles. In my testing of the feature, this will be a huge time-saver for any IT admin trying to make sure a security tool or productivity app works without user prompts.

Other new features

iMazing Profile Editor 2 also supports visionOS configuration profiles, which may not matter to most orgs yet, but it’s a smart sign that the team is thinking ahead. Tools like this will be ready when visionOS becomes part of an IT deployment conversation. Apple Vision Pro was a part of a pretty neat use case for someone deploying UniFi access points. I don’t believe in AVP today, but I’m watching closely for key enterprise use cases.

Version 2 of the app now supports MCX-style payloads. It also supports importing payloads from existing plist files or profiles and exporting them into scripts for automation workflows. These aren’t headline features but updates that make the app even more powerful for certain use cases.

Wrap up

One of the best things about iMazing Profile Editor continues to be how easy it is to use for almost anyone, regardless of experience with Apple IT. There’s no sign-up, paid tier, or connection to a larger ecosystem you’re locked into. It runs locally, and it works just as well whether you’re managing ten Macs or ten thousand. That makes it an excellent app for IT teams who just want a reliable tool to build and edit profiles without jumping through hoops, and it pairs well with your device management platform.
