Apple is adding a silicone ring around in-store MagSafe chargers to stop them from scratching the aluminum backs of iPhone 17 display units, Consomac reports.
Apple blamed the iPhone 17 “scratchgate” on worn-out MagSafe stands at its retail stores, and said the marks weren’t scratches but residue from wear and tear on the stands. At the time, it advised users to wipe the backs of their phones to avoid seeing the scratches and also promised to fix the issue at its end.
It is unclear whether the silicone layer is Apple’s permanent fix or a temporary workaround. It’s also unclear whether the company is implementing this measure across its stores worldwide or only in France, where the report emerged, and if regular users can apply the same method at home.

Critics have attributed the scratches to the “anodized” aluminum used in the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, where the issue appears most prominently. Their recent predecessors had a far more durable titanium chassis.

Apple has refuted those claims, stating that its anodized aluminum frame is just as durable as its other products. It, however, warned that the colors may chip off slightly over time. Going by reactions on social media, that explanation wasn’t convincing enough.
Another major issue with the new iPhone 17s is Apple Intelligence. Users weren’t able to download the models required to run certain AI features. Earlier this week, Apple reportedly fixed the issue with a server-side update. Users can now head to Settings > Apple Intelligence to enable the AI features and download the models.
