This Wednesday, December 17, Marvel launched the countdown leading to Avengers : Doomsday. For the occasion, the studio launched an exceptional system by offering a new scene every week for more than a month. Before Avatar: Fire and Ashes, the public will be able to discover who will return for this project that we are happily promised is Dantesque. These announcements follow those of last March, when a camera moved for six hours to reveal chairs.
Not so long ago, this first teaser would have made us jump. But something is wrong. We sincerely wonder if all this is really still worth seeing. And if, after more of a decade of religiously following the Marvel Cinematic Universewe let it go? Do we still believe in it?
“I’m talking to you about a time…”
In 2017, fans (like us) are on the lookout. Marvel promised a epic conclusion to his Infinity Sagaan apotheosis after a decade of good and loyal service. Thanos’ plan has been unfolded in around ten films. His arrival was promised in rather clever post-credits scenes and Civil War put the team in a state that allows their reunion to truly be sacred.

When the company published a video of a few minutes on February 11, to formalize the start of filming of the Russo brothers’ film, it was above all a question of looking back on the path traveled and giving some clues about what the future holds for spectators. We find Robert Downey Jr, Chris Pratt and Tom Holland in front of a huge set and the directors Joe and Anthony Russo in an interview. Everyone recalls the uniqueness of this project, everyone is enthusiastic about the idea of finally seeing these characters come together in the cinema. Until now, the Guardians and the Avengers had not crossed paths. Iron Man and Captain were at odds.
A year later, the spectators are there. THE previews are sold out in France as in the rest of the world and there is no doubt that the first part of the diptyque will mark the history of the MCU and more broadly pop culture. In the darkness, when the fanfare is replaced by a distress call from the Asgardian ship, the fans within us stamp their feet. It’s here, the moment we’ve been waiting for since the Chitauris invaded New York in front of Joss Whedon’s camera. We are far from imagining that the Russo brothers’ proposal would upset the balance of the franchise. We even considered that Marvel would take a break of several years after the finale ofEndgame. Yes, we were probably a little naive…
Marvel can’t do better…
Infinity War et Endgame have set the bar so high that it seems now out of reach. What better than the heartbreaking disappearance of half a universe? How can we shock with the death of a hero when the dead can come back again and again to sacrifice themselves for the twentieth time? We’re talking about you Loki. Who can still be surprised by the arrival of the X-Men when Doctor Strange 2 brought them in and they were at the epicenter of Deadpool & Wolverine ?
No, if there is one thing that surprised us during the long and boring direct ofAvengers : Doomsdayis that no burst of interest was felt among the Marvel aficionados that we were not so long ago. Nothing was able to tickle the child within us, nothing was able to erase this impression of a failed party with high school alumni. We grew up, and we no longer have anything in common. It would be a lie to say that the information communicated via this first teaser did not arouse our curiosity. But we welcome the news with just as much concern. The worry that what was an excellent conclusion would be tainted by Marvel’s propensity to stretch the envelope too much.

We are even worried to see the number of characters announced for Doomsdayto know how the narration will be able to exploit them all without bordering on indigestion. In Infinity Warthere were no less than 25 main characters and just as many secondary ones. 27 names were shared yesterday… and Marvel is already hinting that more will be announced in the coming months. It must be said that some are sorely missing, like Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, who we nevertheless imagined at the epicenter of the story.
A priori, this row of chairs is not surprising, since Secret Wars was already a Dantesque event on glossy paper. But, even with a film that should happily exceed three hours, our heroes will have to stick together. They won’t have a lot of comic issues or series episodes to tell their story. This is all the more true since Doomsday do not take advantage of the advance that Infinity War. Its plot is based on a phase that is at best incomplete, at worst chaotic. Until recently, it was indeed the arrival of Kang the Conqueror that Kevin Feige was preparing. It is for this reason that he appeared in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniawhy one of its variants was at the epicenter of Loki sur Disney+.
Doctor Doom only had one post-credits scene. Proof if any were needed that the Maison des Idées is groping forward, Brave New World did not have the luxury of even mentioning his name. Seven years earlier, Thanos’ personality had been built over several films, through the journey of Gamora, Drax and even Loki. Doomsday starts from a blank sheet for a result that we hope is not as crazy as phases 4 and 5 of the MCU.
Suspense? For what?
But rather than speculating about what the next movie might or might not be Avengerslet’s go back a little to what we know about Doomsday. In addition to its monstrous cast, the project is making waves because it brings together heroes who were thought to be put in the closet. Ok, let’s talk about the shield in the middle of the room. Warning spoilers if you don’t want to know what this teaser contains.

It would be a lie to say that we didn’t feel a little excitement at the idea of reuniting with an MCU legend. Steve Rogers is going to be back in action, it’s not really a surprise in itself, since that was where Chris Evans was preparing for a weightlifting competition. However, there is something a bit exciting about seeing Marvel confirm its return with great fanfare. But once you get past this little adrenaline rush, you wonder why (no, really) why did you spill the beans so quickly? The returns of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield had been kept secret until the last minute and spectators therefore rushed to the cinema to see three generations of web weavers united. Here, we sacrifice suspense and waiting for the benefit of marketing…
We had already pointed out that the promotional campaign of Captain America : Brave New World was incomprehensible, Marvel is doing it again and confirms that it is now no longer a question of surprising spectators but of giving them a precise menu of the film that they will see a few months later. She will still ask the first spectators not to spoil the next ones, you still have to have something to spoil… We will quickly go over the fears that we feel in seeing a character whose journey had concluded in a rather clever way come back. The risk of tainting the story of Steve Rogers is there, as much as that of Iron Man. The Endgame credits, as a farewell, have already lost their splendor.
Now, will we be there on December 16, 2026professional conscience aside? Yes. Because the Marvel machine is well oiled and the franchise has taken us hostage and is holding us by our worst flaw: curiosity. Faced with all the challenges that the Russo brothers and screenwriter Stephen McFeely will have to overcome, we can only wait impatiently to find out if all these beautiful people will transform the essay. And this is undoubtedly where Marvel has succeeded, the fate of the characters (and the actors) matters so much to us that we do not let our disappointment make us break completely with this franchise in decline. Stockholm syndrome? No doubt.
