ASRock Rack’s PAUL is a low-profile PCIe IPMI card built around the widely-used ASPEED AST2500 controller for providing IPMI/BMC capabilities for any platform. New patches provide mainline Linux kernel support for ASRock Rack PAUL with the necessary Device Tree bits.

ASRock Rack’s PAUL is similar to the ASUS “Kommando” IPMI Expansion Card that also saw recent Linux DT patches for enabling a mainline kernel to run on that ASUS IPMI card. ASRock Rack PAUL powered by the AST2500 controller has 4Gb of DDR5 memory, two SPI flash ROM 32MB modules, low-profile PCIe 2.0 physical format factor, Gigabit Ethernet, VGA output, and a variety of headers. The power consumption is rated at 7.54 Watts for this IPMI expansion card.

For those with an ASRock Rack PAUL and wanting to tinker with your own Linux/OpenBMC build on it or are considering the card, this new patch series provides that DT support. The DT patches were tested with the Linux-powered OpenBMC running on the hardware. The video engine though has been found to not always be stable as one potential caveat.
