There’s been a recent lull in activity around the open-source Linux driver for ASUS devices with the HID interface used for supporting various features. But developer Denis Benato who has worked on the ASUS Armoury Linux driver and the like is working on advancing the ASUS HID driver for Linux systems.

The Italian Linux developer wrote this weekend on the kernel mailing list about working to pick-up the ASUS HID driver development:

“Previous asus-wmi maintainer and asus-linux developer has become less active in the project and left me in charge of advancing the support for ASUS equipement on Linux.

I am preparing to send a patchset of his revised work to support ASUS ROG Ally handhelds devices and since that work is also useful in expanding support for 2025 models it is important to improve the hid-asus driver as future patches will build on top of these changes.”

That message was accompanied by 7 patches to the hid-asus driver mostly for different fixes but also adding XG Mobile Station 2022 support as part of the series. That XG Mobile Station 2022 came down to just needing a different device ID from the newer 2023 model already supported by the Linux kernel.

The patch series on its own isn’t too exciting but good to see ASUS HID driver activity picking up given the popularity of ASUS ROG gaming handhelds, laptops, and other devices popular with Linux gamers/enthusiasts.
