No need to present anymore Indiana Jones and the Last Crusadebest film in the Steven Spielberg saga and monument of adventure cinema. Released in 1989 in cinemas, the film starring Harrison Ford and Sean Connery continues to be a reference for many spectators around the world. Between the effectiveness of Steven Spielberg’s direction, its captivating story and the talent of its leads, the archaeologist’s quest for the Holy Grail is unanimous. But if Indiana Jones owes its popularity to Ford and Spielberg, we must not neglect the importance of the work of John Williams in the birth of this legend. The composer has created some of the most iconic original music in the seventh art, Indiana Jones is no exception to the rule.

In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, another composition by the musician steals the spotlight from the character’s theme. If you listen to 19 minutes and 39 secondswhen Donovan’s wife asks him not to neglect his guests, you can hear “Imperial March” on the piano. The sequence is short, played on the piano as if it were background music. It should nevertheless bring back memories of a galaxy far, far away for viewers. It is indeed the theme of Darth Vader, just as famous as that of our good old Indiana Jones.

A wink… and a clue for the rest

If this is not the first time that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have made references to Star Wars in the adventure saga, this wink is less known than that linked to R2D2 and C3PO. As a reminder, we see the two little robots in The Lost Arkon hieroglyphics on the wall of the Well of Souls. Here, it is more subtle and above all directly linked to the presence of an actor on screen. Indeed, Julian Glover appeared in the saga Star Wars. He played General Veers. He commanded the Imperial troops’ attack on Echo Base on Hoth. The presence of the Darth Vader theme is a reminder of his participation in the science fiction saga.

This is also a hint of his future betrayal. In the film, he approaches Indiana Jones by presenting himself as a patron with a passion for history. He tasks Indy with finding the Grail, supposedly to enrich human knowledge. In the last act, he will betray Indy and his father. He has the ambition to drink from the cup to achieve immortality. Not really altruistic. Add to that the fact that he willingly collaborated with the Nazis and you get an obvious parallel with his role in Star Wars.
