AWS has introduced its custom CPU for cloud workloads most advanced to date. It is about Graviton5which offers up to 25% more computing performance than the previous generation of Gravitron CPUs, according to the company, without losing sight of energy efficiency, in order not only to speed up the execution of applications, but also to reduce costs and meet sustainability objectives.

Graviton5-based EC2 M9g instances allow you to process information more efficiently because they have more CPU core density available on Amazon EC2. Additionally, since it has 192 cores on a single chip, it reduces the distance that data must travel between cores, reducing communication latency between them by up to 33%, in addition to increasing bandwidth.

The chip also includes five times the level 3 (L3) cache, making each Graviton 5 core have 2.6 times more L3 cache than Graviton4. Thanks to this, you have to wait less time to access the data, and the applications respond more quickly. Graviton5 also offers more memory speed, allowing you to process larger data sets and run memory-intensive applications more efficiently.

Your network bandwidth has increased by up to 15% on average, leading to faster data transfers, faster backups, and better performance for distributed applications. Graviton5, on the other hand, adopts the latest 3nm technology, and with a design optimized for AWS use cases. Additionally, it enables system-level optimizations such as direct die cooling, a method of cooling a computer chip without its protective casing.

Graviton5 instances, built on AWS Nitro System, take advantage of sixth-generation Nitro Cards to offload virtualization, storage, and networking functions to dedicated hardware. It is an architecture that delivers nearly all server compute and memory resources directly to your workloads, while implementing a zero-access design for operators that prevents any other system or person from logging into EC2 servers, reading instance memory, or accessing client data.

Graviton5 enhances Nitro System with the Nitro Isolation Engine, using formal verification to provide mathematical certainty that your workloads are isolated from each other and from AWS operators. Nitro Isolation Engine’s minimal, formally verified codebase uses mathematical proofs to ensure it behaves as defined, setting a new standard for cloud security.

Las Graviton5-based M9g instancesdesigned for general purpose workloads, They are now available in trial version. As for C9g instances, for compute-intensive workloads, and R9g instances for memory-intensive workloads, they are planned for 2026.
