Elon Musk has never hidden his hostility towards the famous community encyclopedia Wikipedia. In recent months, he has frequently accused the platform of suffering from a broad political and ideological bias, of leaning toward the Democratic camp and of being controlled by “activists” in the service of a “progressive agenda”.
At the beginning of September, he began to discuss the possibility of mobilizing his industrial empire to build his own alternative to the famous encyclopedia. It is now done: on Twitter, the billionaire announced that version 0.1 of Grokipedia, managed largely by the conversational assistant Grok, was now online, at this address.
Musk was full of praise for his new product, presented as a factually reliable alternative to a Wikipedia “irremediably biased“. In his post, the billionaire went so far as to assert that this still in its infancy version was “already better than Wikipedia”, before retweeting numerous messages from Internet users committed to his cause.
“Grokipedia is not just an updated version of Wikipedia; it shows what went wrong, why, and what was fixed. Highlight each line, flag it, add context, and Grok reviews the situation in real time. Human judgment, combined with AI, could be the most reliable and complete source of truth if we continue to design it correctly”, says one of these followers.

A first shower of criticism
But even if Musk claims to anyone who will listen that this encyclopedia is based on the principle of “absolute truth”, Grokipedia was quick to be targeted by a first wave of criticism. And for good reason: its content seems riddled with the same kind of ideological bias that Musk criticizes Wikipedia for — just with a different point of view.
As noted The Worldthe billionaire’s page describes, for example, the way in which he would have been targeted by “criticism of mainstream media biased toward the left“. On the Black Lives Matter movement page, we also see that Grokipedia insists on the fact that these demonstrations led to “the costliest riots in insurance history”, without the slightest allusion to the fact that most of these demonstrations did not cause any public disturbance.
What is worrying is that these elements of language seem directly borrowed from the rhetoric of Musk himselfwhich is not not necessarily reassuring about the factual neutrality of Grokipedia. For the moment, this very much resembles a primarily symbolic project, intended to serve the ideological positioning of its creator.
Certainly, these could be accidents, the majority of the content having been compiled by an AI model whose entire work is impossible to supervise. After all, Musk himself warned that version 1.0 would be “ten times better” than the one currently online. But what is already clear is that this initiative perfectly illustrates Musk’s desire to create his own information ecosystem, and that he will stop at nothing to redefine the criteria of truth himself — for better and for worse.
