Most smartphones, even budget handsets, include decent camera setups with some of the best camera phones offering extra impressive options such as 4K or even 8K recording ability and excellent quality in all light conditions.

Even so, where smartphones do need some extra help is with stabilising. Relying on your own hands to capture clear images and videos can be tricky and often result in shaky, blurry or unclear effects. This is why it’s beneficial to invest in a smartphone gimbal.

A smartphone gimbal is a tool that holds your phone in place and assists in producing smooth footage while decreasing the chance of any unwanted shakes or vibrations.

Ideal for vlogging, capturing concert footage or to just guarantee clear outcomes every time,  gimbals can also boast extra features to further enhance your videos. For example, some gimbals have a compatible app that’s packed with extra modes that can enhance your filming, such as panorama, timelapse and cloning.

Many apps also have their own editing suites and sharing shortcuts too to post directly onto social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.

Gimbals also come in different forms, with some featuring magnetic clamps to safely and securely grip your phone, while others utilise extendable arms and mini tripods. Some models, such as the Zhiyun Smooth Q4 even come equipped with removable fill lights to really enhance your vlogs.

As there are so many features available, choosing the best smartphone gimbal to suit your needs can be tricky. Fortunately, we’ve tested and reviewed a variety of models and put our favourite options in this handy list.
If you want a dedicated camera for vlogging then be sure to check out our best vlogging cameras lists too. Otherwise, if you want to further upgrade your smartphone experience then visit our best accessories for iPhone list too.

DJI Osmo Mobile 7P

Best overall

Pros

  • Now tracks subjects while using any app
  • Portable and easy to deploy
  • Good stabilisation and controls

Cons

  • No 360º infinite tracking
  • Pull-out mini tripod not very stable

The DJI Osmo Mobile 7P is arguably the best smartphone gimbal on the market, though not without serious competition from the likes of Insta360 in particular.

The Osmo Mobile 7P delivers everything you need from a mobile gimbal, including a portable design, great stabilisation and subject tracking in any app with the addition of the new Multifunctional Module.

The folding, travel-friendly design and built-in extension rod are similar to those found on the Osmo Mobile 6, but there’s a new integrated mini tripod that can be pulled out from the bottom of the handle. Deploying this gimbal is a breeze and the clamp grips onto phones securely without the need for leveling. It’s lightweight too, at just over 350g.

The new Multifunctional Module is the biggest difference between the 7P and the 6 that came before it. This detachable accessory snaps onto the side of the phone clamp, functioning as a tracking device, LED fill light and Mic Mini receiver in one. It’s also compatible with the Osmo Mobile 7, but only comes in the box with the 7P.

The Osmo Mobile 7P supports DJI’s ActiveTrack 7.0 technology with multi-person tracking and gesture controls in the Mimo app. The Multifunctional Module brings these capabilities to other apps, including the iPhone camera app and live streaming services. This actually allows the Osmo Mobile 7P to surpass the capabilities of the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro which doesn’t support tracking in Android apps. That said, the Osmo Mobile 7P doesn’t support the 360-degree ‘infinite’ tracking found on the Insta360 gimbal, which could be a deal breaker for some.

The Osmo Mobile 7P has up to 10 hours of battery life, though the Multifunctional Module and LED fill light will drop that down to about four hours. That said, if you’re looking for a great all-round gimbal with compact design, simple operation and superb tracking, the Osmo Mobile 7P is our winner.

Insta360 Flow 2 Pro

Insta360 Flow 2 Pro

Best for 360-degree tracking

Pros

  • Super fast and intelligent subject tracking
  • Now works with hundreds of iPhone apps
  • The updated design is far more accessible

Cons

  • No cold shoe mount
  • A far better buy for iPhone users

Insta360 succeeded in snatching DJI’s smartphone gimbal crown in 2023 with the excellent Insta360 Pro. The brand held onto the title of ‘best gimbal’ for several years before DJI regained its lead in 2025 with the Osmo Mobile 7P. That doesn’t mean the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro is far behind, however.

In fact, the Flow 2 Pro will still be the best smartphone gimbal for many people thanks to its great design and 360-degree ‘infinite’ tracking.

The Insta360 Flow 2 Pro has taken on a new design that feels far more fluid to unfold than the hinge on the Flow Pro and with less room for error. There’s a small mirror for selfies and the joystick is much larger than before, offering greater control over the gimbal’s movements.

Sadly, these design updates seem to have come at the expense of the cold shoe, which will be a major downgrade for content creators. The gimbal is also clearly designed with iPhones in mind, meaning Android users may prefer to opt for the latest DJI model. iPhone-exclusive features on the Flow 2 Pro include one-tap NFC pairing and support for more than 200 camera apps with Apple DockKit.

That said, both Apple and Android users can access the gimbal’s Deep Track 4.0 tracking software in the Insta360 app. We found the speed at which this gimbal tracks and follows subjects to be incredibly impressive and there’s multi-person tracking and gesture control support, as well. There’s also support for 360-degree panning, allowing you to move around the gimbal and capture an almost VR-like perspective of the world around you.

The gimbal has a 10-hour battery life and can also be used to charge your phone on the go. If you’re not fussed about the lack of cold shoe or support for third-party Android apps, the Flow 2 Pro is a great choice.

DJI Osmo Mobile 7

DJI Osmo Mobile 7

Best affordable gimbal

Pros

  • Lightweight and foldable
  • Easy to use
  • The built-in tripod keeps this gimbal compact

Cons

  • No built-in extension rod
  • Multifunctional Module sold separately

The DJI Osmo Mobile 7 is very similar to the Osmo Mobile 7P, making it the best alternative to the 7P if you’re on a budget.

The main differences here are the lack of an extension rod and the Multifunctional Module not being included in the box. However, you can always buy the latter separately if you change your mind, making it easy to upgrade this gimbal.

The Osmo Mobile 7 is also a bit smaller and more lightweight than the 7P, which gives it an edge when it comes to travelling, though not by a huge amount. The 7P is plenty compact already.

Otherwise, the Osmo Mobile 7 is practically identical to our current favourite gimbal, delivering superb tracking from ActiveTrack 7.0 and the same 10-hour battery life that drops to four hours with the Multifunctional Module attached and fill light cranked up.

The gimbal is simple to set up with no balancing required. There’s are four main gimbal modes to play with (PTF, PF, FPV and SpinShot) with subject tracking and gesture controls available in the DJI Mimo app. Like on the 7P, these features can also be brought into third-party apps and live streaming services when the Osmo Mobile 7 is paired with the Multifunctional Module.

If you need an extension rod to capture high and low shots or squeeze more people into selfies, opt for the Osmo Mobile 7P. Otherwise, there’s really nothing you can do with the 7P that you can’t do with the 7 – though some of the more advanced features will require the Multifunctional Module sold separately.

Asus ZenGimbal

Asus ZenGimbal

Best for beginners

Pros

  • An excellent gimbal for beginners
  • Unlimited 360-rotation is great for panoramic shots
  • Object/subject tracking works really well
  • Almost silent when in use

Cons

  • The app is unusable on iOS
  • No extendable selfie rod
  • The folding mechanism feels needlessly convoluted

Another budget-friendly pick is the Asus ZenGimbal. Like Insta360, Asus is relatively new to the mobile gimbal scene. This option is best suited for beginners with its 360-rotation and simplified app – as long as you don’t have an iPhone, that is.

The Asus ZenGimbal has a design that is reminiscent of the Zhiyun Smooth 5 with its all-black aesthetic and atypical folding mechanism. The controls have been simplified for beginners and the gimbal comes with a small tripod, though we did find that the folding mechanism on this device wasn’t the easiest to pack away.

We were impressed by just how quiet the ZenGimbal is in operation and its ability to pan 360-degrees without getting caught by a threshold makes it possible to capture incredible footage without physically moving your position. This makes the gimbal extremely forgiving to amateurs with a much smaller learning curve compared with the other gimbals on this list.

The Asus Shot app is similarly beginner-friendly with a simple interface that minimises clutter without sacrificing substance. The app includes standard photo and video modes, along with hyperlapse, time-lapse and panorama modes.

There are also subject and object tracking modes that offer incredibly smooth footage and work just as well as the tech found on competing gimbals. The biggest letdown here is the fact that the Asus Shot app seems to be completely unusable on iOS devices, resulting in choppy frame rates that weren’t present in the Android app.

The ZenGimbal has a 2900 mAh battery which we found was more than enough to last several days of shooting, though Asus has made no direct claims in this area.
