Verdict

Affordable, reliable, and easy to use, the Black + Decker BCBL200L-QW is a leaf blower that does the job without breaking the bank. It lacks raw power or a particularly comfortable grip, but it’s light and easy to point where you need it, so could be good for smaller gardens.

  • Affordable and reliable

  • Lightweight

  • Two speeds

  • Top of battery rubs on the wrist

  • Slow charging, no charge level indicator

Key Features

Introduction

The Black + Decker BCBL200 is a sensibly priced and perfectly capable 18V cordless leaf blower. Although it’s not the strongest and the battery takes a long time to recharge, it’s light and really easy to handle, but only really suitable for smaller gardens.

Design and Features

  • Affordable leaf blower
  • Lightweight
  • Built in leaf scraper

Decked out in its familiar black-and-orange colour scheme, with a large handle on top, the Black+Decker BCBL200L-QW is a simple, uncomplicated leaf blower that features an inline axial-style fan.

Weighing just over 2.6 kg with the battery in place, it’s light enough for anyone to use and easy to point around.

The top handle lacks a rubberised grip, but it’s still comfortable to hold on to. The only problem I found was the placement of the battery on the back of the handle. It rubs against the wrist, which can be annoying.

The only control is a simple switch on top of the handle. You can choose between off, “eco”, and full power. The BCBL200 comes with a single 18V, 2.0Ah battery. It doesn’t have a huge capacity, but at this price point, it’s fine for smaller gardens. And another bonus is that it fits in dozens of other Black + Decker tools, from drills to sanders, and you can reuse any batteries that you might have.

The nozzle end is removable for long term storage, and although there’s no dedicated place for it, you could easily hang it up by its handle to save space.

A feature I like about this blower is the built in leaf scraper. The bottom of the nozzle tip has a flattened section that you can use on stubborn wet leaves. It works well when air power isn’t quite enough.

Performance

  • Two blowing speeds
  • 15 minutes runtime on a single charge
  • Slow recharging

Although the Black+Decker BCBL200L-QW doesn’t have a variable speed trigger like the Stihl BGA 30, the two air speeds available are perfectly adequate. On “eco” mode, I measured 10m/s, enough for dry leaves and general blowing, and 18m/s on top speed (7m/s when measured from 1m away).

Supplied with an 18V, 2.0Ah battery, the Black+Decker BCBL200L-QW optimises portability and light weight over anything else. On full power, the blower runs for around 15 minutes, which is fine for a small garden space. On the lowest setting, it makes 78dB, and on the highest, 90dB. It’s not excessively loud, even at top speed.

It’s easy to point where you want it, and although the air speed won’t push your arm back, it’s fine for most jobs. And if the air alone can’t tackle wet leaves, the scraper is a great way to agitate the stuck-on stuff.

The only performance issue I found is in the sluggish charging time. The little battery takes two hours to recharge, so you need to get everything blown away in a single session or buy a backup battery.

Should you buy it?

You want a useful and uncomplicated garden tool

Decent performance for not a lot of money, makes this a good leaf blower for a smaller garden.

You should want to tackle a large garden space

There are more powerful leaf blowers available with larger capacity batteries.

Final Thoughts

It’s easy to use the Black+Decker BCBL200L-QW. It might lack a bit of raw power, and the battery takes ages to recharge, but for the money, it’s a perfectly decent piece of garden equipment, particularly if you already have batteries that you can use.
