In the space of a few weeks, two heavyweights from the manga/anime universe have taken over the cinema, each in turn. The first for a triptych of films planned to stretch until 2029 – at the rate of a feature film every two years – and the other for a film serving as a direct sequel to season 1, promising and praised by critics as much as by the public. Demon Slayer, the first mentioned, made a tidal wave in the world with The Infinite Fortressso much so that it is already the fifth biggest success at the global box office in 2025, with 660 million dollars collected across the four corners of the globe.

Will it be the same in a few days/weeks for Chainsaw Man ? The mangaka’s work Tatsuki Fujimoto has already seen a brilliant anime adaptation, with season 1 available in its entirety on the platform Crunchyroll. This is the famous Japanese studio MAP – who owes Attack on Titan or even Jujutsu Kaisen – who is behind the production of the anime. And it is therefore through a film that Worthy is making a comeback. Unlike Demon Slayerwhich has finally abandoned the fashion of the recap film and with few new features, Chainsaw Man is a real film. And a great film.
The anime was already renowned for the quality of its animation. But it is ultimately in the choice of shots, music and in the dialogue sequences between the characters that MAP has done a titanic job in our eyes. In l’Arc de Rezethe emotion is palpable, omnipresent, as much materialized by Denji’s innocence and stupidity as by the tornado of feelings which invades him after his meeting with Reze. A simple waitress in a café, the latter upsets the emotional balance of Worthy Before they met, he was obsessed with Makimathe leader of Special Section 4, an elite unit of Devil Hunters. This section is supposed to kill monsters and, more particularly the most powerful of them, the Gun Demon.
Full of emotions, for fights that look a little messy
While Makima tries, in its own way, to educate Worthy to social relations between a man and a woman, Cutsshe completely disinhibits the young man. So much so that the latter falls in love almost immediately. If l’Arc de Rezein itself, is not just about a romance between Denji and Reze, it cannot be denied that the development of this part is undoubtedly the best. The production exudes sensitivity. Denji, struggling with new feelings he doesn’t quite understand, is touching in this duet.
Obviously, the universe of Chainsaw Man is merciless and the truth ends up coming to light in the eyes of Denji, once again manipulated into these feelings. Because, it must be remembered, everyone – and we mean the demons through this – is mad at Denji’s chainsaw heart, which has transformed into Chainsaw Man after being shot and merged with his chainsaw-demon dog, Pochita. The main revelation of the film, if easy to guess, is no less spectacular. Yes, because behind her angelic smile and face, Reze is something other than a high school student working in a cafe. And the extent of his strength and powers is particularly impressive.
It hits hard, hard, the blood spurts freely and the dead fall in shambles into l’Arc de Reze. Of Chainsaw Man pure juice in a way. In the cinema, the whole thing obviously takes on a whole new dimension. On the screen, we witness an explosion of colors and effects and we feel that MAP wanted to do as much as possible to satisfy the fans. But where Ufotable arrives without batting an eyelid to reproduce with Demon Slayer slick, stylish, beautiful and fluid fights, its counterpart struggles in the same register to offer us readable confrontations.
Oui, l’Arc de Reze is messy at times and you sometimes have to wait for the outcome of a confrontation to finally understand the whole process. There’s no reason to deny your pleasure, however, with a finale that couldn’t have been more successful. Waiting for season 2 of Chainsaw Man, l’Arc de Reze is the perfect and expected junction between this and the end of the first and a little gem of animation to be enjoyed in theaters.
