The team behind Hyper has launched a new brand, Better Mobile Xperience. Starting with the SolidSafe MagSafe battery pack, they want to redefine the iPhone accessory market — and we’ve been using one.
Hyper has been a mainstay in the Apple accessory space for decades. Some team members here at AppleInsider still have the original HyperJuice battery packs that used real MagSafe cables to charge Macs.
In March 2021, Hyper was officially acquired by Targus. While Hyper has still kept its core Apple audience in that time, it was time for some of the original members to move on.
Daniel Chin, the founder and President of Hyper, Barry Miller, Hyper’s GM, and Fred Ghaderpanah, Hyper’s VP of Sales all left. They formed Better Mobile Xperience — or BMX.
It wasn’t about leaving Hyper and Targus, BMX’s Head of Marketing Barry Miller tells AppleInsider. It was about getting back to their roots.
“With BMX, we’re building the kind of products we believe in, unique, innovative, and thoughtfully made from the inside out,” Miller told us. “We’re hands-on with every detail, putting our heart into it, just like we did before. We’re proud of where we’ve been, but even more excited about where we’re going.”
For the brand’s first product, they’re chose a category that’s been very popular in the space — a MagSafe compatible battery pack. We got to take an early look ahead of the launch.
Hands on with the BMX SolidSafe battery pack
What makes the new BMX battery unique is its use of solid-state battery technology, rather than lithium-ion. BMX is one of few companies that have launched a solid-state battery, and we think the only one who has made a MagSafe one.
It’s simple physics — when a Lithium ion battery is broken, the flammable reactants escape. Over the years there have been multiple reports of Li-ion batteries bursting into flames.
Popular accessory maker Anker alone has had two such battery-related recalls. One of those recalls included a MagSafe battery pack, too.
Airlines are now more strict about it, asking passengers to be in visual contact with any batteries for the duration of their flights.
One of the ways the industry is moving towards safer alternatives is by using solid-state battery cells. They can be punctured or be subjected to high heat without igniting.
The BMX power bank comes in 5,000mAh, 10,000mAh, or 10,000mAh plus a microSD card slot to cater to different users. We got to test the 5,000mAh model in black titanium and gold.
The battery has a soft-touch back where the MagSafe magnets are located. On the outward-facing side is home to a small display with various charging metrics.
Our preproduction unit had a basic display. The retail version will have a full-color one, showing the battery percentage, input wattage and, output.
It’s Qi2 certified, which means the battery can deliver up to 15W of wireless power. The USB-C port will deliver 20W of wired power.
BMX is also launching a docking station that can keep multiple batteries charged at once for offices or larger households.
A small multi-function lanyard connects to the corner of the battery that doubles as a cable. It unfolds to reveal a USB-C to USB-C cable, which can be used to charge the battery or charge two devices at once — one wireless, one wired.
A MagSafe battery isn’t wholly unique when the market is flooded with them, but the solid-state technology is very compelling. Overall, the battery feels high quality and works well in our tests.
According to BMX, there have so far been over 2.5 million lithium batteries recalled, over 11,000 “incidents,” and 72 in-flight battery incidents. Having a battery you can trust to be safe is crucial, and BMX wants to be the ones to deliver that trust.
BMX is launching its SolidSafe batteries on Kickstarter for $39, which is half-off its projected MSRP. There are various levels of pledges with different perks, with delivery expected in October 2025.
