Bone Lake, Veronica Mars, Prodigal Son: What’s New to Watch on Netflix the Week of Jan 9, 2026

Every week, Netflix adds a ton of new content for subscribers to stream. Watching all of it would take you more time than you have, so start your weekend with my three top movies and shows for the next seven days. January’s percolating along nicely with a wide range of stuff to watch, including a pair of cult favorite TV shows, a remote cabin thriller, and more.

This Week on Netflix: PCMag’s Picks

Prodigal Son: Seasons 1-2 (Jan. 9)

This short-lived Fox show had a devoted fan following that, unfortunately, wasn’t big enough to keep it on the air, but the two seasons we got are very binge-worthy. Malcolm Bright is a former FBI profiler who has insight into the criminal mind because his father was a notorious serial killer known as “The Surgeon.” With his dad behind bars, Malcolm’s life gets harder when a copycat starts using his methods to commit new slayings. Can he track him down without following too closely in his father’s footsteps and crossing the line himself?

Veronica Mars (Jan. 14)

There have been plenty of “pesky teenagers solving crimes” shows since the dawn of TV time, but none did it quite like Veronica Mars. Kristen Bell had her career breakthrough as the titular teen detective, hiding complex traumas under a wisecracking exterior. A great supporting cast and season-long mysteries with painful payoffs make this a great show to revisit, and the first three seasons (you can skip the unsatisfying fourth) hit Netflix this week.

Bone Lake (Jan. 15)

I’m a sucker for a creepy cabin movie, and 2025’s Bone Lake scratches that itch. When two sets of couples accidentally book the same lake house for a weekend, what starts as merely awkward transforms into a decidedly more homicidal getaway. They discover that the house has some seamy secrets of its own. Audiences loved the nasty twists in this one, and the gory climax will have you covering your eyes.
