Brits warned major mobile provider has closed down a service after 23 years

ONE of the UK’s biggest mobile networks has shut down the service it was founded on after more than 23 years.

The move could leave a small number of customers without access to data if they haven’t already upgraded, despite several warnings that big changes were coming – and a rival network is following suit.

3G is being phased out across the UK to make way for faster 4G and 5G.

The vast majority of people won’t be affected by the move as their phone will just rely on the newer network kit.

But some really old handsets aren’t able to handle 4G and 5G, meaning anyone still using one can’t go online at all when they’re out and about.

Three has announced that it’s now completed switching off 3G.

The remaining masts were deactivated at the end of November after years of work and warning.

“A targeted campaign was mounted to reach, inform and assist the minority of Three customers who were still using 3G-only devices,” Three says.

“All this work was methodically undertaken in tandem with changes to Three’s core network.

“This ensured, for example, that there was no disruption in service for customers of MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) that use Three’s network (such as SMARTY) or for foreign visitors to the UK roaming on Three’s network.”

The move marks the end of Three’s namesake 3G network.

Three was the first mobile operator to launch a 3G only network in the UK back in March 2003.

Its sister network, Vodafone completed the 3G shutdown in 2024.

Rival EE also finished retiring the service in February 2024.

And O2 is the last network, which is due to finish the switch off at the end of 2025.

The most recent area O2 turned off 3G was across Scotland.

“We know that the vast majority of our customers already have a 4G or 5G handset and will not have to take any action, and we’re writing directly to those who will be impacted to provide guidance and support,” Jeanie York, Virgin Media O2’s Chief Technology Officer recently said.

“While customers without a 4G or 5G device in Scotland are particularly urged to take swift action, regardless of where you live in the UK, you will need to upgrade very soon in order to continue using mobile data after 3G is switched off, so please do take action if you need to.”
