Commercial computer prices will rise sharply according to an internal Dell memo, which describes the rate of change in memory costs as “unprecedented”emphasizing that it cannot fully absorb the increases.

Therefore, the American manufacturer has begun to increase the prices of its commercial products starting December 17, which will affect its laptops, desktops, mobile workstations and AI-enabled workstations. Additionally, it alerts its clients that prices will continue to rise and that it cannot guarantee that the Price of orders for future delivery will be maintained.

Price rise for commercial computers

It was a given that the crazy increase in computer memory costs that threatens to collapse consumer electronics would also affect the commercial segment. The Colossal Data Center Infrastructures Needed to Power Insatiable AI Modelsthe unbridled battle for global control of these technologies and the greater profits that memory manufacturers achieve, are behind a worrying situation.

Simply put, AI hyperscalers have accelerated purchases, leaving fewer components available for the rest of the market, whether consumer or professional. A confirmation of where the market is going can be found in the historical record for server sales.

The most affected commercial products will be those that include greater amount of RAM or SSD capacity for storage. Laptops and desktops with 32GB of memory from Dell will increase in price between $130 and $230, while top-tier 128GB configurations could cost up to an additional $765. Another example is laptops with 1TB SSD storage, which will see price increases ranging from $55 to $135.

The crisis affects any electronic component since they all include some type of memory. Professional dedicated graphics will also increase in price. AI laptops equipped with NVIDIA GPUs will rise sharply, with the 6 GB VRAM variant increasing by $66, while the 24 GB model will rise by a whopping $530.

Dell has been the first, but It is feared that others like Lenovo and HP will follow the same path. Analysts expect supply chain pressures to persist this year and we will see how long. The company assures that “placing an order today for future delivery does not lock in current prices”but acting now will help mitigate anticipated increases in memory costs.

Dell asks sales teams to prioritize large accounts, close multi-quarter deals, and minimize discounts to maintain profitability. «It is affecting everyone and there is no way to avoid it for now.“So customers will simply have to pay more if they want the products.”explained a Dell sales employee.

Rising prices for business computers expose companies to market volatility and uncertain costs of business technology. This increase means organizations will need to carefully evaluate their hardware needs, balancing immediate procurement with potential future availability.
