BYD has reached the significant milestone of 60,000 vehicle deliveries to Australia just three years after its entry in 2022, thanks to the rapid success of its first pickup truck and a fall in sales of rival Tesla. The 60 thousandth BYD vehicle was handed over to a customer in Melbourne by BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu earlier this month. Wang told News Corp Australia in an interview that local success was a “signal to the world” that the brand was ready for other mature, competitive Western markets.

The Chinese electric vehicle giant has reported strong growth this year with the successful launch of the Shark 6 ute, which has made up nearly half of the 23,355 vehicles sold in Australia in the first half of the year. The company rolled out its first plug-in hybrid pickup truck in Mexico last May, before making it available to Australian customers in October. BYD’s year-to-date sales in the country have already surpassed last year’s total, while Tesla’s deliveries dropped 38.8% year-on-year to 14,146 units, according to data published by Australia’s Electric Vehicle Council.
