BYD is examining options to enter global motorsport, including Formula One and endurance racing, as it looks to raise its brand profile overseas, according to people familiar with the matter. The Chinese automaker is said to be considering multiple routes, ranging from the World Endurance Championship to F1, including building its own team or pursuing an acquisition.
No decision has been made and BYD may ultimately choose not to enter any series. The report said the cost of joining F1 could be a major hurdle, with a single season potentially requiring as much as $500 million. BYD did not respond to a request for comment. [Bloomberg]
