It’s difficult for anyone who lived through the 2010s to miss the phenomenon Twilight. After the success in bookstores novels by Stephenie Meyer, Summit Entertainment and SND teamed up to adapt the adventures of Bella Swan in the land of vampires. Teenagers have fallen in love with the heroes played by Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, creating a real cinematic phenomenon. With his 37 million de budgetthe film directed by Catherine Hardwicke was a real commercial success. He collected more than $390 million worldwide. It was enough for SND and Summit Entertainment to commit to producing a saga inspired by the four volumes that make up Meyer’s literary series.
But more than just its global box office receipts, Twilight especially marked his era by the community engagement it sparked. Team Edward or Team Jacob, on social platforms, the phenomenon did not stop at the borders of dark rooms. It also inspired many other studios, ready to do anything to attract young spectators and in particular female spectators to the cinema. Nearly 20 years later, few cinematographic licenses can boast of having had the same success.
SND is trying the experiment again, this time with French production. The company will adapt a monument of French literature: The Phantom of the Opera. An impossible romance, fantasy and young characters, all the ingredients are there.
cursed love
The story will take spectators behind the scenes of the Paris Opera. In this contemporary rereading of Gaston Leroux’s novel, a young dancer joins the company and, while she rehearses the Orpheus, she falls in love with a mysterious pianist. As the first performance approaches, between unexplained accidents and disturbing revelations, Anastasia finds herself at the heart of an impossible love story on the border of reality and fantasy. Deva Cassel plays the female character while Julien de Saint-Jean appears in the role of the Ghost. The actor was already in the casting of another literary adaptation which made waves: Le Comte de Monte Cristo. Romain Duris will accompany this troupe of young actors
The production is ensured by Alexandre Castagnetti. This is not his first foray into adolescent storytelling since he signed the two Tamara films in 2015 and 2017. Here, he works from a script that he co-wrote with Camille Fontaine. The film is released in theaters on September 23. If new images have just been shared, we are still waiting for a real trailer to be offered.
A bright idea?
If cinema has somewhat abandoned fantasy when it evolves around young characters, the genre still enjoys great success in bookstores. In recent years, we have witnessed the emergence of a new form of romantic literature. “Romantasy” and “new adult romance”, despite their fairly recent name, have a lot to do with stories like Twilight. Most often, the stories summon young characters immersed in an imaginary universe. Forbidden loves, tortured characters and the discovery of the feeling of love, romance authors adopt codes already tested by their elders to convince the readership.

Success is there since, according to figures from a CNL survey for Kindle, new adult romance and dark romance books are growing in popularity (+14 to +25 points depending on the barometer). Prime Video makes no mistake by focusing on hits in the field. A few weeks ago, the firm announced that it had ordered ten new series inspired by “young adult” novels. SND is therefore part of this general trend of a return of teenage romance to the forefront.
The fact remains that the firm is taking a slightly greater risk by focusing on cinemas rather than subscription streaming. The adaptation of a historical story, rather than a novelty, will still allow it to attract spectators beyond the circles of romance lovers. The first trailer is still awaited, it should allow us to assess the success of this project. The Phantom of the Opera will it be able to seduce teenagers like Twilight did it in his time? SND plays big… and the curtain rises September 23 to know the answer
