While it is possible to play newer Xbox Series X games on the Xbox One, there are a few caveats to keep in mind. Microsoft explains that Xbox Series X and S game compatibility with the Xbox One console is provided on a “per-titles basis” by the game developer, so just make sure you check before purchasing.
This applies to both physical and digital versions of games. For instance, certain titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War include both a Series X and Xbox One version of the game on the disc, but this is clearly stated on the front cover.

Upgrading to a new Xbox Series X or S and not ready to retire your favourite Xbox One titles? Luckily for you, most Xbox One titles can be played on the Xbox Series X, with some games even able to look and perform better on the newer console. In fact, a select few Xbox One titles will benefit from faster frame rates, auto HDR and better screen resolution.
However, just note that there are a small number of Xbox One titles not compatible with Xbox Series X or S, so just make sure you check beforehand.
