Photonic, a Canadian quantum computing firm, is set to invest over £25m in a UK-based research and development facility.

Founded in 2016, the company is developing advanced photonic technologies to enhance data processing capabilities using light-based systems.

The Vancouver-based firm has been backed by London-based investment group Amadeus Capital Partners.

The new R&D site, which the company said will create more than 30 high-skilled jobs, is a boost for the UK quantum sector demonstrating the pull of the country in the advanced field.

Photonic’s expansion to the UK supports the National Quantum Strategy, which set out how Britain can be a global leader in quantum technologies, in part by greater international collaboration.

The announcement comes days after Photonic founder Stephanie Simmons met with Prime Minister Keir Starmer (pictured) at the G7 Summit.

“Photonic’s decision to expand their presence in the UK is a clear vote of confidence in the UK’s fast-growing quantum sector, which is leading advances on everything from sensing for healthcare to quantum computing” said Science Minister Lord Patrick Vallance.

“This £25m investment will create jobs and generate economic growth, while deepening collaboration between the UK and Canada on this vital technology.”

Last year the UK and Canada signed a joint agreement to collaborate on compute infrastructure development, with a particular focus on AI.
