After a decade of commercial failures since the 2010s, smart glasses are hoping to find their way to the general public. For Mark Zuckerberg, they will “redefine our relationship with technology” and the platform could experience a boom comparable to that experienced by smartphones by 2030. At the moment, it is a little difficult to agree with the man who also said that the metaverse would change our lives, but the potential is there and is just waiting to be developed. With the AirGo Vision, the Hong Kong firm Solos wants to seize its chance by integrating ChatGPT-4o into its latest smart glasses.
What is ChatGPT used for in glasses?
My AirGo Vision opts for a relatively classic design for this type of product. They are equipped with speakers and a camera, two common elements that will “feed” artificial intelligence. Indeed, OpenAI’s advanced GPT-4o model stands out for its multimodal approach and its ability to manage several elements at the same time. Artificial intelligence can process and generate text, images or even sound in real time.
This last element is the most interesting since the hardware integrated into the glasses will support the AI to interact with the environment. No need to launch an app or a search service (even based on AI), the simple fact of wearing the AirGo Vision allows the user to access a lot of data in real time. The AirGo Vision with AI provides “real-time information based on visual recognition, recognizing people and objects (“what am I looking at”), or navigating and indicating directions and landmarks (“give me the direction of the Eiffel Tower”)”explains its creator in a press release. The glasses can also help to follow the steps of a recipe or obtain the Price of an item that the wearer has in front of them. “What am I watching and how much does it cost?” or “Is there a better price elsewhere?” are among the examples cited by the manufacturer.
The AirGo Vision also claims a more classic behavior, leaving the possibility of taking photos or videos from the cameras. The speakers and an LED can also alert the user of the arrival of a notification. Note that the LED is also presented to indicate that the wearer is filming. Solos glasses have interchangeable frames and the AirGo Vision are not limited only to ChatGPT. As reported by our colleagues at 01net, the brand already plans to integrate other solutions like Gemini from Google and Claude from Anthropic.
AI glasses could help smart glasses take off
Solos is no newbie, having unveiled the AirGo 3 in January at CES 2024. This model lacks a camera and relies on audio exchanges with AI, focusing mainly on real-time translation. The AirGoVision offers a new glimpse of what AI-powered glasses can offer, becoming an alternative to the Meta Smarts Glasses. Meta’s glasses, developed in partnership with Ray-Ban, also feature an artificial intelligence called Meta AI. While the glasses from the company behind Facebook start at €329, Solos does not mention the price of the AirGo Vision. The company also does not give a specific release date, but we should expect a higher price than the $249.99 of the version without a camera.
