If you’re finding ChatGPT has gone silent, you’re not alone. OpenAI’s chatbot is down for many users around the world right now.
According to Downdetector, the issues began at 3 a.m. ET and have persisted for many users, with reports growing as the United States wakes up. It appeared that some users regained access around 6 a.m. ET, but then reports of issues returned soon after.
In a statement, OpenAI says, “We have identified the root cause for the issue causing elevated errors and latency across the listed services. We are working on implementing a mitigation.”
You can follow OpenAI’s updates on the company’s status tool.
For us, the ChatGPT website is live, and you can ask it questions, but it won’t respond. The cursor, which often means it’s thinking of what to respond, hangs as if it’s still thinking of an answer. Issues seem to be happening across the web and app versions of ChatGPT.
We were eventually able to get the tool to answer the question, “Is ChatGPT down?” It said, “Yes—at the moment, ChatGPT is experiencing a global outage.” It pointed to various news outlets discussing the outage and advised heading to its status page for further updates.
Interestingly, it also suggested trying alternative tools while ChatGPT is down. It said to us, “Meanwhile, you can explore alternatives like Gemini or Claude if your workflow is impacted.”
