China contributed nearly 68% of global new energy vehicle (NEV) sales in the first eight months of 2025, according to Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Worldwide, 13.82 million NEVs were sold during the period, representing 28.2% of total auto sales of 61.98 million units.

China’s NEV penetration reached 48.2% in August, compared with 26.4% in Germany, 31.9% in the UK, 11.1% in the US, and just 1.8% in Japan, underscoring wide disparities in adoption. By category, China accounted for 64.3% of global battery electric vehicle sales and 75.7% of plug-in hybrid sales from January to August. [TechNode reporting]
