The Cooperation Alliance of the UHD video sector of Shenzen (HKEPC), a group composed of more than 50 companies, has launched according to our MC partners a New Cable multimedia communication standard they have called GPMI (General Purpose Media Interface, or general means of means of purpose).

This standard has developed to support 8K and to reduce the number of cables needed to send data and energy from one device to another. According to the creative organization, the cables that have adopted this standard are of two types. The first, type B, has a proprietary connector, while the second, type C, has a standard USB connector.

Since this standard supports data transmission with a resolution up to 8K, GPMI is developed to transport more data than other standards currently used. Of course, there are other variables that can influence the bandwidth necessary for data transmission, such as color depth and soda rate.

The type C GPMI connector has a maximum bandwidth of 96 Gbps, and is capable of transmitting 240 watts of power, more than double the 40 Gbps data limit that admit the USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 standards. In this way, this type of cables is capable of transmitting more data. However, it has the same power limit as the USB-C connectors that use the EPR standard (extended power rage, or extended power range).

As for the type B GPMI connector, it exceeds the rest of the cables, since it has a maximum bandwidth of 192 Gbps, and a power delivery capacity limit of 480 watts. It is not yet a level that allows connecting the most powerful gaming laptops to an 8K monitor, it is more than enough to connect most gaming equipment with discreet high -end graphics.

This will reduce the level of cables and connectors of equipment users who prefer to work with a gaming equipment, and of course also play with it, since you can use a GPMI cable both to transmit energy and data.

In addition to all this, The GPMI standard is compatible with the HDMI-CEC universal control standardwhich means that it is possible to use a remote control for all devices that can connect through GPMI and use said function, further simplifying the disposition of systems and equipment.
