Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD is on track to sell 50,000 cars in Mexico this year and aims to double that number in 2025, the company’s country head Jorge Vallejo said publicly on Tuesday in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey, Reuters reported. The EV giant has been selling the all-electric versions of its Tang sports utility vehicles and Han sedans locally through several dealers since last year, and introduced its first pickup truck, the Shark, to the country in May, TechNode reported. Vallejo added that the company will announce the location of its first plant in Mexico, capable of making 150,000 cars in phase one, by the end of this year, without revealing further details. In February, BYD Americas CEO Stella Li told Reuters that the facility, mainly for the local market rather than for export, will likely be located in central and southern areas of the country, rather than northern Mexico near the US border.
