For nearly two decades HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) has dominated the world of display, allowing the transmission of high-quality audio and video between devices like TVs, monitors, laptops, and gaming consoles. But now it seems the end is near for HDMI! China has unveiled a new display standard called GPMI General Purpose Multimedia Interface that’s going to revolutionize the overall viewing experience. It will surely challenge the long-standing dominance of HDMI and DisplayPort. In this article, we will delve into the understanding of what exactly is GPMI and how it’s going to affect the importance of HDMI in today’s world.

What is GPMI?

In collaboration with more than 50 companies, China has recently unveiled GPMI- a General Purpose Media Interface that will now combine video, audio, network connection, and power supply, into a single cable. It is developed in partnership with companies like Hinsense, Skyworth, TCL and others. GPMI not only boasts higher bandwidth, but it also provide improved data transmission capabilities. After the launch of the GPMI, the technology has now become a main and strong contender in the global audio-visual market.

The group of these 50 companies is called The Shenzhen 8K UHD Video Industry Cooperation Alliance that developed this new GPMI to support 8k video. Additionally, one of the main feature that will enhance our viewing experience after the launch of the GPMI is that it reduces the number of cables required to stream data. It also helps in powering from one device to another easily.

GPMI is an alternative to HDMI and DisplayPort standards with up to 192Gps bandwidth, 480W power delivery.https://t.co/cGBJpwxiUG

How GPMI will Work:

As per report, the GPMI is launched in two models including Type B and Type C. Type B works as a proprietary connector and Type C is compatible with USB-C devices or standards. For basic understanding, the 8K videos are equipped with 4 times the number of pixels as compared to 4K along with carrying 16 times more pixels that 1080p resolution. It means if the recently launched GPMI is eligible for the 8K videos then it is stronger and delivers more data than current standards available in 4K.

According to Chinese report, the GPMI is built in a way that it carries a maximum bandwidth of 96 Gbps. Additionally, it is able to distribute 240 watts of power, which is actually higher or rather double than the 40 Gbps data limit of USB4 and Thunderbolt 4. Nevertheless, it has its power limit just like in the

Talking about the GPMI Type-B, it is equipped with the maximum bandwidth of 192 Gbps. Not only this, it also delivers power of up to 480 watts. However, it’s still not on a level where it can be used for the high-end RTX 5090 or above gaming PC, but it will more or less be enough for the other gaming laptops that delivers high-end discrete graphics. This cable can be used for both power and data nad hence it will simplify the portable gaming computer solution. Other than this, it can also support a universal control standard like HDMI-CEC that allows you to connect all products and appliances with one single remote.

Is it Really the End for HDMI?

Not exactly, but yes it can! Since the introduction of HDMI in the early 2000s, it has been a part of our like in terms of connecting our devices, TV’s, monitors, laptops, and gaming consoles. It has always been known for its simplicity and ability to carry both sound and video through a single cable. Although, with the growing need and demand for better and high resolutions, faster refresh rates, and flexible connectivity, HDMI started showing its limitations. This is where the newly launched GPMI steps in and promises for the faster connectivity, higher resolutions, and efficiency. With the growing demand in technology, let’s see what it holds for the HDMI in future!
