Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor (GWM) on Wednesday officially announced plans to develop its first supercar, with Chairman Wei Jianjun releasing a new preview image that teases a design resembling the general shape of a Ferrari or Lamborghini. Wei did not share any specific details about the car, which was surrounded by a dozen of the company’s senior executives in the photo. The image was posted on the Chinese microblogging platform Weibo to mark the 35th anniversary of the automaker. The announcement comes after GWM Chief Technology Officer Nicole Wu Huixiao told a Chinese car blogger in April that the company had been working on a supercar project for at least five years. At the time, Wu expressed confidence in competing with the Ferrari SF90 — the Italian carmaker’s most powerful and technologically advanced model — while acknowledging that the company learns from its competitors.
