Cisco has donated the agntcy project to the Linux Foundation. The objective is to create a fundamental infrastructure of open standards, a «Internet of agents»allowing the agents of disorders to communicate and collaborate without problems.
With the rise of agricultural AI, the solutions that can perform tasks autonomously without explicitly indicating how to perform each step, has emerged A problem that is not new in the technological field: interoperability. How to get agents to collaborate? An answer is Cisco’s agntcy project.
Agntcy was first released by Cisco in March 2025 and since then has had the support of more than 75 companies, including technological colossians such as Dell, Google Cloud, Oracle and Red Hat. And it is important. Without open interoperability standards like this, companies have rushed to develop specialized agents, who usually work on isolated silos that cannot function or interact effectively with each other.
The Linux Foundation will host the Internet of Cisco agents
Agntcy’s passage to the neutral governance of the Linux Foundation has the objective of attract new companies that join the initiative and thus turn it into a standard for the entire industry. The Linux Foundation has a long career promoting consensus for what would otherwise be controversial technological battles. A few weeks ago, the non -profit foundation adopted the A2A protocol, a standard that will be essential for agency. Cisco’s is another important element to manage it, as VIjoy Pandey, General Manager and Senior Vice President of Outshift By Cisco explains, in an entrance to the company’s blog.
“Building the fundamental infrastructure for the Internet of the agents requires the property of the community, not the control of the supplier … what is missing are not smarter agents, but a complete infrastructure that allows any agent to collaborate with any other, regardless of who has created it or where it is executed”.
Cisco has provided the project a complete framework to resolve the central challenges of collaboration between multiple agents, such as:
- Discovery of agents: An open agent scheme frame (OASF) acts as a “agents”, allowing them to find and understand the abilities of others.
- Agent identity: A cryptographically verifiable identity system guarantees that agents can demonstrate who they are and carry out authorized actions safely between different suppliers and organizations.
- Agent messaging: A protocol called Safe Interactive Messaging of Low Latency (Slim) is designed for complex and multimodal communication patterns of agents, with integrated support for human interaction in the quantum circuit and safety.
- Agent observability: A specialized monitoring framework provides visibility in complex workflows of multiple agents, which is crucial to purify probabilistic systems.
Interoperability is essential for the future of AI with agents. Interconnection technologies must adapt to agents wherever they are implemented, either in public clouds, private data centers, EDGE or on devices. Under the umbrella The Linux Foundation, the existing working groups will continue their development, inviting greater community participation to accelerate its adoption. Agntcy’s code and documentation is available in Github for developers and any person interested in contributing.
