Debian Libre Live 13.3 Images Released For Avoiding Non-Free Firmware

Building off this past weekend’s Debian 13.3 release is now Debian Libre Live 13.3 images for this derivative that ships the install/live media without any of the non-free firmware assets to remain a free software blessed image.

Debian back in 2022 decided to allow non-free firmware on the install media for hardware requiring it. Te non-free-firmware was permitted since on Debian install images and live images. When Debian previously shipped without the non-free firmware, it typically meant no GPU acceleration support out-of-the-box, issues with wired and wireless networking, etc.

But not everyone is happy with Debian non-free firmware by default and thus Debian Libre Live has been getting off the ground to provide install media without those non-free firmware bits.

Out today is Debian Libre Live 13.3 for the newest install image. For now it’s considered testing but will be marked as stable once the project has a Debian Libre Live logo created.

Debian Libre Live 13.3 is available for AMD64 and ARM64 with separate spins for GNOME, KDE, and Xfce desktops along with slim and standard builds too.

Framework 13 Laptop

Debian Libre Live 13.3 has been tested on a handful of systems including the Framework 13 with AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, Lenovo ThinkPad X201, NovaCustom NV56, Dell PowerEdge R630, and Supermicro Ampere Altra Max ARS-110M-NR. Though without the non-free firmware, your mileage will vary like not being able to enjoy any accelerated Radeon graphics with the Framework 13 powered by Strix Halo.
