The ax fell this Tuesday, February 10. Unemployment in France reaches its highest level since the third quarter of 2021. At the end of 2025, it was at 7.9%, an increase of 0.2 points. Over the year, it increased by 0.6 points, INSEE announced this Tuesday. Young people, between 15 and 24 years old, are particularly affected (21.5%). A phenomenon reminiscent of the situation in the United States and which could foreshadow an employment crisis among young graduates in France.

According to a study conducted in 2025 by Stanford University in California, the impact of machine-learning tools on access to the first job is already visible. The researchers were interested in two professions particularly affected by the democratization of AI: web development and customer relations.

The institution argues that companies that make the most use of artificial intelligence tend to rely less on young workers than in the past. The recruitment of young profiles is in sharp decline. The employment rate of other age groups continues to increase.

No qualified workers in the near future?

In a column addressed to employers, Harvard professors urge responsibility. “Entry-career jobs — by providing a safe environment to try, fail and try again — are essential for developing adaptable and confident professionals.” Seliminating entry-level positions would have deleterious effects on unemployment among young graduates. It would also be a threat to more skilled jobs in the near future, with young graduates not having the opportunity to learn on the job and improve their skills.

Towards a change?

More than ever, artificial intelligence is an essential component of the job market in France and around the world. Many professions will or are already impacted by these technologies. According to Salima Benhamou, doctor in economics and project manager at the department “work, employment, skills” at France Stratégie, we could, for example, witness a deskilling of professions with a high proportion of routine and repetitive tasks. At the same time, artificial intelligence could significantly improve work organization, information management and team coordination. All this data should lead to the promotion of transversal skills, such as interpersonal skills, creativity and teamwork. You still need to have a job for which to be trained…
