A CUSTOMER was left furious after a restaurant asked for a “second tip”, sparking a debate among fellow diners.

The outraged customer took to Reddit to air his grievances about the added tip.

The diner explained in a post on Reddit that he had paid a $1 tip when he ordered his meal through the restaurant’s website.

But when he went in to pick up his meal, he was handed a receipt with a line on it for an additional, second, tip.

He fumed: “If I choose to go back, it’ll be zero tip.”

One user commented: “That’s beyond ridiculous. I am glad I am not the only person annoyed by the tip entitlement.”

Another wrote: “Corporate greed is always looking for new ways to screw the customer.”

While another joked: “Tip for the tip with an additional tipping fee.”

One person even said that they have been put off dining out because of the price.

The angry diner also complained about another restaurant nearby in the Reddit post.

He explained that at that location customers who don’t tip in the app are asked to sign a receipt when they turn up to pick up their food.

He added: “I’ve been tipping zero there in pick ups for some time.”

Tipping is an essential part of American culture, but many think it has gone too far.

Almost three out of four say tipping has gotten out of control, according to a WalletHub survey last year.

Half of Americans say they often leave a tip due to social pressure, rather than as a reward for good customer service.

But tipping habits are also different between the different generations, research by Blueprint found.

Millennials are the most generous, while those who are part of the Silent Generation are less likely to leave a big tip.

Tipping laws in the US

By Lydia Doye

  • In the US, tipping is not a legal requirement.
  • Tips are a voluntary act of showing appreciation for service, and should not be enforced.
  • But tipping is an essential part of American culture and is expected at many establishments.
  • At many restaurants a tip of 20 to 25 per cent on top of the bill is expected.
