A Waymo driverless rideshare car caused a backup at a busy fast food drive-thru in Santa Monica, California on Monday.
The autonomous vehicle stalled out in the middle of the drive-thru entrance at Chick-fil-A.
The incident caused a larger-than-usual line for waiting customers.
It took place around 9:30 p.m. at a Chick-fil-A on Lincoln Boulevard, according Nexstar affiliate KTLA.
Bystander Chris Kellogg was among those waiting for the self-driving vehicle to self-drive its way back onto the street.
His videos showed Chick-fil-A workers standing around the stalled vehicle.
The car’s hazard lights were on before it backed up briefly and briskly and stopped again.
Kellogg said he waited in line for about half an hour before being told the restaurant, which is drive-thru only, was closed.
Waymo – a subsidiary of Google’s parent company – offers futuristic, self-driving taxis.
The company is headquartered in Mountain View, California and was founded in 2004.
The company offers rides to the public in California, Arizona, and Texas.
Despite the impressive technology, they are still evolving.
Waymos have had their share of hiccups since debuting on city streets.
Stalling in a fast food drive-thru line is a first, however.
It is unclear whether the vehicle was carrying a passenger, following a fare, or simply went off course.
Waymo confirmed that the car got stuck and was later retrieved by their team.
Waymo said it’s “committed to continuously improving our service and making appropriate updates to prevent this from happening in the future”
It also said it plans to make updates to prevent similar incidents.
Chick-fil-A said the drive-thru was briefly closed to safely remove the car.
The walk-up window stayed open while the restaurant was closed.
