Since August 29, 2025, Volvo has integrated into the user manual as well as on the touch screen of his Volvo Ex30 an unequivocal warning: “Recharge can affect the operation of your cardiac stimulator. Anyone carrying a cardiac stimulator or a generator of biventricular stimulation impulses without defibrillation capacity should refrain from recharging the car by itself. Ask another person to recharge your car ”. The brand also adds: “You must also stay away from chargers and load cables when you recharge the car“.
What do scientific studies say?
Volvo, known for its position -oriented positioning, seems to adopt here a strict precautionary principle. However, this measure could be more motivated by legal considerations than by a proven risk.
According to the point, a study carried out in 2023 by the German Center of the Heart in Munich (Deutsches Herzzentrum) offers reassuring results. In this extreme protocol, 130 patients with pacemakers or defibrillators loaded various electric vehicles with terminals of up to 350 kW, positioning the load cable directly on the implanted device. Result: no clinically relevant interference, no detected abnormality
The measurements have revealed limited electromagnetic fields (max. 80–90 µT at the cable, up to 150–180 µT at home), well below the estimated risk threshold (300 µT). Moreover, Dr. Carsten Lennerz, the main author of the study, concludes that it is possible to reassure the patients, subject to a simple precaution: to prevent the cable from touching the stimulator directly and keeping a certain distance.
Even if the electromagnetism emitted during recharge seems confined, these fields can remain significant in certain cases. Thus, it is often recommended for pacemaker carriers to maintain a distance of at least 30 cm between their device and a magnetic source, including a charging station or an electric cable.
If Volvo takes care not to leave any room for ambiguity by integrating a clear precautionary message into the manual of his ex30, the current scientific data show that, even in extreme scenarios, the risk of interference is very low.
