DOLLAR General clarified a detail of its return policy in a post on X.
The comment came in response to a customer’s confusion over the chain’s policies.
It all started with a post by X user @bandobarbiie, who wasn’t certain of DG’s policy.
ASKED AND ANSWERED
The user wanted to know if a digital receipt had the same functionality as a paper receipt.
Digital receipts are a new way to keep track of your purchases, and Dollar General offers them.
“I need to know.. if I wasn’t given a physical receipt for an in store purchase.. can you not just process the return/refund w the digital receipt?” she asked.
She added some more details to the question.
“If no, why not? & what is the point of a digital receipt if it’s not accepted?” she asked.
A Dollar General associate replied through the company’s X page.
She signed her name as Isabella.
Isabella thanked the customer for reaching out.
Then she clarified: “A return can be processed without the physical receipt.”
“Hope that helps,” she added.
Dollar General’s digital receipts can be sent via text or email after you make a purchase, according to the company’s website.
Signing up to use them could make it easier to save money thanks to digital coupons.
CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS
Dollar stores have renewed appeal in an era of belt-tightening across the country, but that hasn’t stopped some shoppers from complaining about the stores.
One customer recently slammed Dollar General for “pathetic” apparent understaffing.
Another slammed an “absolutely stupid” return policy quirk that impacted his son’s purchase.
Meanwhile, Dollar Tree got heat online for a “mess” in the aisles.
Some dollar store chains have struggled to keep their doors open in recent years.
In 2024, Dollar Tree announced it would close about 1,000 stores.
Dollar General shut down over 50 locations last year, blaming shopper spending.
At least 1,000 dollar stores to close, CEO says
Dollar Tree, the parent company of Family Dollar, revealed it would close around 1,000 stores in the coming years.
The company announced in March that it will shutter the stores after the discount retailer it acquired nearly a decade ago plummeted in value.
Dollar Tree plans to close about 600 Family Dollar stores in the first half of this year.
This will be followed by the shuttering of 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores over the next several years.
The chain of discount variety stores has also indicated that sales are being affected by the cost-of-living crisis and inflation.
But USA Today added that Dollar Tree has also been rocked by reduced government benefits for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
This has left families struggling to juggle finances, with as much as $250 less per month.
