Dollar General responds after shopper gets ‘consistently’ overcharged

DOLLAR General has been threatened by a shopper accusing the retailer of overcharging customers, sparking a response from the company.

The furious shopper took to X threaten the budget retailer with legal action if it did not “fix the system” used when pricing up goods at the checkout.

They gave the retailer 30 days to make changes before going to the relevant attorney general and launch a class action lawsuit after being overcharged in tax.

The shopper said: “@DollarGeneral, if you do not fix your system and stop trying to overcharge your customers, I’m going to start making the purchase at the incorrect price, file a complaint with that states attorney general, and then start a class action lawsuit.”

They gave Dollar General 30 days to solve the issue.

The retailer immediately replied asked for a direct private message for further information which further enraged the shopper as they refused to DM the company.

“Today, I stopped to get soft drinks and pizza. Pepsi 12 packs were 3 for $15, Dr. Pepper was 3/$15, 2 pizzas $10. $40,” they said.

“Tax and deposit in NY should have been $3.20 and $3.60.

“Total should have been $46.80. It rang up $64.80.

“When I explained it to the cashier, she checked the prices and said I was correct but that she said she had to go with what the system said.”

They added: “It’s illegal. If it doesn’t stop, I’m going to make sure that there are repercussions for your illegal activity, and I will do so in every state I experience.”

The shopper claimed the mistake happens consistently and that they track their items while shopping and work out the tax to ensure they are not overcharged.

Dollar General Under Fire: A Closer Look at Store Woes

“These are not isolated incidents, and it has happened to me at dozens of DG’s in multiple states,” they said, adding that “hundreds if not thousands” of shoppers

“I’m positive that it will not be hard to find hundreds, if not thousands, of people to corroborate that this is a systemic issue throughout DG.

“I presume it is not incompetence and instead done to improve revenue. It will not be a good look for the company. FIX IT!”

The U.S. Sun has reached out to Dollar General for comment on the shopper’s allegations.

But it was reported last month by Supermarket News that the company was fined along with Family Dollar for overcharging customers in North Carolina.

Two Dollar General stores and several Family Dollars were fined by the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Standards Division for price scanning errors in the final quarter of 2024.

Together, the stores were fined roughly $55,000.

At the time, Dollar General told the news outlet: “Dollar General is committed to providing customers with accurate prices on items purchased in our stores, and we are disappointed anytime we fail to meet this commitment.

“When a pricing discrepancy is identified, our store teams are empowered to correct the matter immediately for our customers.”

Meanwhile, the retailer has promised to investigate its processes at one store after a loyal shopper boycotted the store, abandoning her cart with $150 worth of goods over a payment issue.
