HBO Max has a huge selection of shows and movies from all of its partner networks, including HBO, Discovery, Food Network, and more. New shows and movies are always being added, so here are my top choices for this weekend and the week ahead, plus everything new streaming below. If you watch one thing on Max this week, make it must-see documentary Thoughts & Prayers, but there are other cool movies and shows to catch as well.
This Week on Max: PCMag’s Picks
Eddington (Nov. 14)
The latest film from Ari Aster, Eddington dials back the nightmarish surrealism of Beau is Afraid for something a little more grounded, but still provocative and full of twists. Set in the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic, it follows the clash between a New Mexico mayor and his sheriff about mask mandates and lockdowns as it escalates in increasingly bizarre ways. Critical response has been mixed, but I’m into that.
The Seduction (Nov. 12)
There’s no shame in admitting that one of the draws of HBO has always been the somewhat smutty stuff, and new French-language drama The Seduction looks to deliver on that. A prequel to the film Dangerous Liaisons (also streaming on HBO Max), it follows the Marquise de Merteuil as she positions herself as the leading courtesan in the country, leveraging her sexuality to gain power, at the cost of everything else.
Thoughts & Prayers (Nov. 18)
Of all the uniquely American problems, school shootings are one of the most perplexing. New documentary Thoughts & Prayers travels across the country to examine the impact these horrific crimes have had on students, parents, and teachers. The $3 billion “active shooter preparedness industry” has become a key part of education, but what is it doing to our kids?
