Every week, Netflix unveils a ton of new content for subscribers to stream. Watching all of it would take you longer than your holiday break, so start your weekend with my three top movies and shows for the next seven days. December brings us into the holiday break with a big-budget Korean disaster film, the second half of Stranger Things’ final season, and more.
This Week on Netflix: PCMag’s Picks
The Great Flood (Dec. 19)
I realize that thinking about the apocalypse over the holidays isn’t necessarily in the spirit of the season, but Korean thriller The Great Flood is receiving near-universal acclaim. Set in the very near future, ocean levels begin to rise rapidly, drowning human society in the blink of an eye. Trapped in an apartment building, a young single mother must save her son and escape, with the future of humanity on the line. It’s a non-stop thrill ride that’ll keep you engaged.
Eden (Dec. 23)
Getting away from it all seems pretty attractive, but Ron Howard’s 2024 drama Eden shows that it’s not all good times. When a group of German expatriates set up a new civilization on a remote island in the Galapagos, they quickly encounter conflicts around class, respect for the natural world, and the future of their society. It’s based on a truly bizarre true story.
Stranger Things 5: Volume 2 (Dec. 25)
The climax of Netflix’s biggest cash cow gets closer to an end on Christmas Day, as the second half of Stranger Things‘ final season drops. The crew has failed in their quest to kill the malevolent Vecna, with his plot to use 12 children to transform our world in his image revealed. With Will’s nascent psychic powers unlocked, do they have enough firepower to close off the Upside Down forever?
