Elon Musk explained to his teams that xAI could reach AGI (artificial general intelligence) in the very near future, according to Business Insider. Very close, but not too close either: “ one or two years », with 2026 in sight. A date specific enough to make you dream, and vague enough to be pushed back without too much damage.

Elon Musk’s promises only bind those who believe in them

This is not the first time that the boss of Tesla and SpaceX has announced the imminence of this famous AGI. In May 2024, questioned by a manager of Google AI Studio, the billionaire responded without hesitation: “ next year “. With the end of 2025 approaching, the AGI is still awaited, but the promises are still there.

History repeats itself with a regularity that no longer surprises many people. Elon Musk announces, the calendar slips, then a new promise arises. It doesn’t matter if the old one wasn’t kept: the important thing is to maintain attention. In a sector where billions rain down faster than clear definitions, AGI perfectly plays its role as a technological Holy Grail.

It must be said that AGI is a remarkably practical concept. No one really agrees on its definition. For IBM, this would be an artificial intelligence capable of equaling or surpassing humans on all cognitive tasks. Others see it as a form of artificial consciousness, capable of perceiving itself. A theoretical vagueness which allows all interpretations, and all announcements in the wind.

Elon Musk has long blown hot and cold on the subject. In March 2023, he signed a letter calling for a global pause in the development of AI, raising the darkest scenarios. Less than a month later, we learned that he was discreetly developing his own project. A few more weeks, and xAI was officially launched, with Grok as its showcase.

The message has evolved since then, but the mechanics remain the same: the AGI is coming soon, very soon, and you have to be part of it. According to Business InsiderMusk reportedly indicated that xAI’s funding was doing very well, with ” between 20 and 30 billion dollars raised per year “. A dizzying sum, which shows to what extent the more or less far-fetched promises work with investors at least.

And if the AGI is slow to materialize, there are other deadlines. Last October, in a podcast, Elon Musk assured that he would demonstrate a flying car before the end of the year. The timetable is tight, but after all, it would only be one more promise which, like the others, will have at least fulfilled its mission: to increase the pressure and the quotation.
