EnergyCloud, a not-for-profit social enterprise pioneering the use of surplus renewable energy to combat energy poverty, has unveiled the launch of its first project in England in collaboration with Amazon.

The initiative, which will be piloted this year, will provide free hot water to households living in energy poverty by using excess renewable energy that would otherwise be wasted via an EnergyCloud-enabled smart device.

The devices use surplus renewable electricity, such as wind energy produced during off-peak times, to heat immersion tanks, offering residents savings on their energy bills while reducing carbon emissions.

The launch builds on the successful collaboration between Amazon and EnergyCloud in Ireland. In 2023, households in the region equipped with EnergyCloud devices were able to receive a free tank of hot water for nearly one third of the year.

“This launch builds upon the impactful work already achieved with Amazon in Ireland and showcases the potential of turning surplus renewable energy into a valuable social resource,” David Nicholl, chair of EnergyCloud England, commented.

YES Energy Solutions, along with key partners, will oversee the installation and integration of the smart devices.

Alison Kay, vice president and managing director, UK and Ireland, at Amazon Web Services (AWS), added: “This initiative is a great example of how cloud computing, renewable energy, and technology can be harnessed to drive innovation and create positive social impact.

“We are committed to making a positive difference in the communities and countries in which we operate, and we look forward to our continued collaboration with EnergyCloud.”
