The Irish startup Equal1 has just unveiled a fairly fascinating machine, and to our unique knowledge of its kind: a hybrid server that combines quantum computers with traditional computers in a medium designed to easily integrate into the current infrastructure.

The machine was baptized Bell-1 In tribute to the eminent John Stewart Bell, a pioneer of quantum physics to whom we owe the importantissimes of Bell. Physically, this 200 kg beast is nothing like a conventional server; You just have to take a look at your cryogenic system to understand that it is not a machine like the others.

A unique hybrid machine

This element indeed betrays the presence of a chip called UnityQ Quantum Processing Systemwhich gives it a quantum calculation capacity. With only 6 qbits, this processor is far from revolutionary in terms of raw power. For reference, Willow, the last quantum chip from Google Quantum unveiled last December, in account no less than 105. But that of Equal1 is already riddled with very important features in practice, especially in the correction of errors which are notoriously difficult to manage in computer science.

Despite everything, the Bell-1 is far from being able to compete with the best quantum computers of the moment. But it is not objective of the company, which is well aware of this limit. With its machine, the firm is especially looking for Place solid foundations to accelerate the adoption of quantum computers by industry.

To achieve this, she bet on a apparently unique hybrid approach in the industry. Indeed, the quantum chip is integrated into a system which is also capable of taking advantage of the best conventional high performance (or HPC) components, based on silicon. In theory, the two poles can work hand in hand on the solving complex problems, which could open the way for new concrete applications.

Laboratories at Datacenters

The other important point is that the entire machine is designed to Integrate without friction in datacenters and HPC calculation centers todaywithout the immense constraints inherent in quantum computer science. The cryogenic system, for example, is surprisingly light and compact compared to those who feed exclusively quantum computers.

It is also mounted on rails which allow it to be integrated directly into a standard server rack. Finally, to operate the Bell-1, just connect it to a standard electrical outlet. A difference in size compared to devices exclusively dedicated to quantum computing, which generally depend on a large tailor -made power system to maintain Qbits at a temperature close to absolute zero.

All these points are decisive in this context, because quantum computers traditionally depend on a highly specialized infrastructure which makes deployment and exploitation complex and expensive. The fact that the two technologies thus coexist within the same affordable device allows professionals to put their hands in the citch. With the Bell-1, operators can experiment to find ways to exploit the unique capacities of quantum computer science, without sacrificing the traditional calculation power which remains much more important in practice at present.

« We have released the quantum technology of the laboratory to integrate it into real environments, where it can stimulate innovation and resolve complex computer challenges. It is the advent of quantum IT 2.0, where accessibility, scalability and practicality occupy a central place “Said CEO Jason Lynch. “” By eliminating the obstacles linked to the cost, infrastructure and complexity, Equal1 allows companies to exploit the exponential power of quantum computers today, and not in the distant future. Bell-1 is not only an advance, it is a computer revolution He says.

The Bell-1 is already available for sale, unlike cutting-edge quantum computers that are currently confined to research laboratories. It will therefore be very interesting to follow the work of Equal1, because its singular approach could well give birth to a brand new technological niche as fascinating as promising.
