NOTRE Dame quarterback Riley Leonard revealed a message on his wrist after scoring a touchdown Monday night.
Leonard, 22, got his team off to the perfect start against Ohio State in the National Championship Game.
The quarterback ran in a touchdown from one yard to give his team an early lead at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
And Leonard held up a message written on his wrist to the ESPN cameras.
The words were part of a bible verse.
They read, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
Unfortunately for Leonard and Notre Dame, their strong start never lasted.
Ohio State came storming back to win 34-23 and clinch their first national title since 2014.
Leonard finished with 255 passing yards and two touchdowns through the air, in addition to his score on the ground.
And he remained optimistic after the game despite an agonizing defeat.
“I’m happy to see godly men come out on top no matter what the circumstance is,” he said.
“I’m very happy to praise Jesus in the lowest of lows, as well.
“We just came out and played Notre Dame football, took advantage of our matchups when we had to.
“We just drove the ball down the field.
“We had to run the ball a little bit. Everything was just clicking.”
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman admitted he had a tricky balancing act between running Leonard and calling more pass plays.
The quarterback had 17 carries for 40 yards, including the early touchdown.
“We couldn’t run Riley every play,” Freeman said.
“It’s not right for Riley, and it’s not going to sustain the success we needed offensively.”
But Leonard claimed, “If coach wants to call my number and have me run the ball every single play, I’ve got no problem with it.
“The next couple drives maybe I got relaxed a little bit, and I can’t let that happen.
“And I apologize to everybody for the way that I played after that drive in the second quarter because it’s unacceptable.”
