In 2007, the Polish studio CD Projekt, then unknown to the battalion, released its first game with The Witcheran action, adventure, RPG game, inspired by the books of the same name written by Andrzej Sapkowski. Following the success of the first game, CD Projekt will follow up with two other opuses, The Witcher 2 : Assassins of Kings in 2011 and The Witcher III : Wild Hunt in 2015.
After a short break and the release of CyberPunk 2077 in 2020, their fourth game and second license, this time adapted from the universe of Mike Pondsmith, the Polish studio announces in December 2024 the return of its series The Witcher with a fourth opus.

During its latest quarterly review, CD Projekt Red confirmed that the game The Witcher IV will not come out, whatever happens, not in 2026. The co-CEO of the Polish firm, Michał Nowakowski, confirmed that at the moment the company was not not capable to give an exit period:
“We are not releasing any details regarding the expected release date. It is therefore impossible for me to answer this question. We can only confirm that the game will not be released in 2026 and, as usual, we do not discuss technical or design aspects. Nothing unusual to report regarding The Witcher 4: production is progressing normally, in accordance with our internal schedule. That’s all we can say for now.”
Following the call with investors, Michał Nowakowski confirmed that CD Projekt Red’s ambition was to release the three games of this new trilogy (which will begin with The Witcher IV) in six years from the release of the first game. The Witcher V et The Witcher VI should therefore arrive in an interval of two and four years after the release of The Witcher IV.

During its latest quarterly report, CD Projekt Red confirmed that the development of The Witcher IV was progressing very well. Today, there are no less than 447 people working on the game. This is the studio’s next priority project which is in the active development phase. Although there is still no official release date or time frame, the game would still not not expected before 2027 in the best case scenario.
At the moment, we still don’t have a specific release date for The Witcher IV and CD Projekt Red remains quite evasive on the subject. The Polish studio has confirmed the good progress of development which appears to be on schedule. According to initial indications, we can expect The Witcher IV pour 2027 in the best case.
On what media is The Witcher IV expected?
Officially, The Witcher IV is expected on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. During Summer Game Fest, CD Projekt confirmed that the goal was to offer a game playable at 60 FPS on standard PS5s.
What story will The Witcher IV be based on?

At the moment, very little information. According to early indications from CD Projekt, The Witcher IV will feature Ciri and not Gerlat de Riv. Ciri will leave for “her own journey to becoming a professional monster slayer”. On the official website of the game we can read that the game will take place “through a brutal dark-fantasy world”.
Will Geralt of Rivia be back?
Yes ! The hero of the first three games will be back in The Witcher IV. However, as of today, we do not yet know what role he will play, nor if he will be a playable character.
Do you have to have played the first games to discover The Witcher IV?
No, not necessarily. Although The Witcher IV will take place in the universe of The Witcher, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that this fourth opus is the start of a new saga. It is of course preferable to have played the first games to have all the references, but it is not essential to discover and appreciate Ciri’s future stories.
In which region will this new game take place?

The Witcher IV will take place in new regions. For the moment, the studio did not wish to say more, but players will be able to visit new unpublished places. The village seen in the game’s first teaser has been confirmed to be one of these locations found in the northern areas of the world.
It is not yet known how many regions will make up the world of The Witcher IVnor if regions known as the famous fortress of Kaer Morhen will return or not.
According to the first information implied by the studio, the MAP of The Witcher IV should be as large as that of The Witcher III.
Which graphics engine for The Witcher IV?
For the development of their next games, CD Projekt Red decide to abandon their REDEngine engine to use the Unreal Engine. This will be the case for The Witcher IV but also for CyberPunk 2 (currently in development). During the Summer Game Fest we were able to have a technical presentation absolutely beautiful and quite stunning.
