How long has CyberPunk 2 been in development?

After officially announcing the development of CyberPunk 2 with the pre-production phase in May 2025, CD Projekt confirmed in August that development was progressing well, without a hitch. The studio also confirms that it is looking for many people and that job offers are available, with the main objective of “develop engaging dialogue and storylines, as well as memorable characters, in collaboration with the game’s creative director and lead writer”.
Officially, CyberPunk 2 is in development for a few weeks. Pre-production of the game began in 2025. Before that, the CD Projekt Red teams were in the conceptualization phase between 2022 et 2025. The game was officially announced under the name « Project Orion » in October 2022 and under the name CyberPunk 2 in May 2025. This is not the final title of the game which may still change between now and the launch of the communication phase.
As a reminder, the first CyberPunk 2077 game was announced in 2012 via a first teaser. The communication phase began in 2017 and the game was released in 2020.
When should CyberPunk 2 be released?
As of today, we have absolutely no information around the release date of CyberPunk 2. According to the usual schedules from CD Projekt Red, knowing that the game has just entered the pre-production phase, the release of the next game CyberPunk would not be expected before 2029 in the best case.
Before that, the studio must take care of the development of The Witcher IV which would be expected on its side for 2027 in the best case.
On what media will CyberPunk 2 be released?
Officially, no support has been announced for the sequel to CyberPunk 2. The game will be expected on PC. Concerning consoles, the PS6 and the new Xbox Prime will undoubtedly be exits and already well established on the market in 2029. It is therefore a safe bet that the game will be expected on the next consoles and that CD Projekt Red will avoid releasing CyberPunk 2 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S to avoid reproducing the same errors as with CyberPunk 2077 and its chaotic exit.

Which cities will be present in this new game?
In May 2025, Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the CyberPunk universe from which CD Projekt Red was inspired to create its first game, was able to give us some information on the development of this sequel. The man confirmed that he was much less involved in the development of this sequel, compared to the first game. He still has access to certain information and he can communicate with members of the team.
He was able to confirm during a convention that CyberPunk 2 should offer at least two cities with the return of Night City, but also a new city that looks like a Chicago gone wrong.
To date, we do not know if this second city will be accessible in free mode like Night City or if the scenario and the missions of the game will take us during a period of the game in this new city.
Do you have to have played CyberPunk 2077 and its DLC to play this sequel?
Having no information on the game’s story to date, it is impossible to know if this sequel will be an extension of the story, with the same characters (like The Witcher). Egg and what CyberPunk 2 will offer a whole context with new stories and new characters.

According to recent job offers published by CD Projekt Red, the Polish studio would work on an online part since the company is looking for a senior network engineer to join the team, who will play an essential role in the design and implementation of the network architecture and online system.
This job posting is primarily looking for someone who can design, implement and maintain scalable, high-performance network architectures for the upcoming game’s online features. This includes creating low-latency, high-performance online experiences. Finally, this role also requires leading a team responsible for developing and optimizing multiplayer systems (like matchmaking), and resolving issues related to latency, bandwidth usage, and server performance.
For the moment (June 27, 2025), we do not know. For the first game, CD Projekt Red briefly mentioned an online part, which will never see the light of day, mainly because of the numerous problems linked to the launch of the game and the delay which was incurred. Perhaps, for this sequel, CD Projekt Red will have the time and resources necessary to offer an online part.
