Gerald Mullally, who spent almost a decade as a director in the Prime Minister’s Office and Cabinet Office, has been named the new chief executive officer of Oxford Quantum Circuits.
Mullally, who has also held an advisory role to the Irish government and positions at consultancies Accenture and PwC, will become the permanent CEO of the quantum firm after 14 months as its interim boss.
The new chief executive first joined Oxford Quantum Circuits in 2022 as a partnerships lead, rising to a vice president the following year before being named interim CEO in 2024.
In his time as the group’s temporary boss, he oversaw the launch of its public quantum roadmap, its expansion in the US, a Series B investment round and the launch of the UK’s first quantum error correction testbed and the world’s first integration into a commercial data centre.
“Leading OQC is a tremendous honour,” Mullally said. “We are not only building a world-class quantum company – we’re shaping a new global industry. I’m proud to work with such talented people to realise the profound potential of our core architecture and deliver commercial impact at scale.”
Mullally’s extensive background in commercial partnerships positioned him well to received the top job, as the company works towards commercial viability, a particular challenge in quantum computing.
“Gerald has led OQC with clarity, integrity and conviction over the past 14 months, guiding the company through a critical phase of development,” said company founder and chief science officer Dr Peter Leek. “His leadership has brought strategic focus to the business and aligned our scientific breakthroughs with long-term growth.”
Jack Boyer, who was appointed as chair of the company’s board of directors in April, said: “Gerald has provided strong leadership through a period of rapid growth and innovation. He is the right leader to take OQC forward as the company shapes the future of quantum computing on the global stage.”
