In late October 2025, a rumor circulated online that rapper Snoop Dogg saved 39 dogs from being euthanized in a New York dog shelter. According to the story, the musician quietly visited a struggling rescue center, paid off its debts and adopted an elderly Labrador retriever named Buddy.
One Facebook post (archived) with the story began:
BREAKING : Snoop Dogg quietly walked into a small New York rescue shelter on the brink of closing — with just 48 hours to go before all the dogs inside would be put down.
The bills were overdue. The owner had given up hope. But then, the 48-year-old rapper, entrepreneur, and philanthropist — known for his toughness on stage and surprising compassion off it — walked straight to the back, where an 11-year-old Labrador mix named Buddy lay weak and forgotten.
He knelt down beside him, gently petting his head and whispering softly. Then, standing up, he asked, “How many dogs are here?”
“Thirty-nine,” came the quiet reply.
Snoop Dogg’s voice was calm but full of conviction: “All 39 dogs deserve a tomorrow.”
The post included an image of Snoop Dogg crouching beside three dogs.
The story spread not only on Facebook, but also on Threads, YouTube and Instagram. Readers searched our website for information about the rumor and emailed us to ask whether the rumor was true.
However, the story was false. Searches of Bing, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo found no news media outlets reporting about Snoop Dogg rescuing 39 dogs from a New York shelter. Prominent news media outlets would have widely reported this rumor, if true.
The fabricated story very much resembled glurge, which Dictionary.com defines as “stories, often sent by email, that are supposed to be true and uplifting, but which are often fabricated and sentimental.” It was one of hundreds of similarly fake stories about celebrities on Facebook that aim to generate advertising revenue via websites linked in posts.
For example, the above-mentioned Facebook post redirected readers to an article on an advertisement-filled website supposedly detailing the alleged rescue carried out by Snoop Dogg. The article began:

Moreover, Sightengine and Hive Moderation, online artificial intelligence detectors, found the image featured in posts spreading the claim highly likely to have been generated using AI.

Signs of AI featured in the photo included inconsistent lighting and shadows, slightly distorted facial features and unnatural textures of Snoop Dogg’s skin and the dogs’ fur.
